The Aula of the Karolinum
Ar y 14eg o Dachwedd mi roedden ni, fel rhan o gor y brifysgol yn canu mewn cyngerdd o nodi diwrnod Rhyngwladol y Myfyrwyr (sydd ar Dachwedd y 17eg). Mae o yn ddigwyddiad mawr yn y brifysgol achos mai nodi dienyddiad 9 o fyfyrwyr a staff y brifysgol gan y Natsiaid ar y diwrnod hwnnw yn 1939 mae o. Mewn protset yn mis hydref saethwyd myfyriwr o’r brifysgol, Jan Opletal, ac fe drodd ei angladd ar y 15ed yn brotest anferth yn erbyn y Natsiaid. Mewn ymateb dyma’r Natsiaid yn cau holl brifysgolion y wlad, gyrru 1,200 o fyfyrwyr i wersylloedd crynhoi a dienyddio 9 o aelodau Prifysgol Charles. Diwrnod trist ond pwysig felly i’r Brifysgol.
On the 14th of November as part of the university Choir we sang in a concert to mark the International Day of the Students (which is on November 17th). It is an important date in the university’s calender because it is the date on which 9 of the university’s students and staff were executed by the occupying Nazis in 1939. In a protest in October a student from the university, Jan Opletal was shot, and his funeral in November turned into a massive anti-Nazi protest. The Nazis reacted by closing down all the universities of the country, sending 1,200 students to concentration camps and executing 9 members of Charles University. A sad but important day for the university then.
Mi roedd y cyngerdd yn cael ei gynnal yn Aula y Karolinum, hen neuadd hynafol yn adeilad gwreiddiol y brifysgol lle mae nhw’n cynnal seremoniau graddio a phethau pwysig fela, ac mi roedd na lwyth o bobol bwysig yr olwg yna, gan gynnwys y Reithor newydd yn ei holl fling. Mi roedd y cor yn canu dwy gan- yr ore o bell ffordd oedd U hodila o’r opera “The Brandenburgers in Bohemia” gan Bedrich Smetana. Mae hi wedi bod yn sownd yn fy mhen i byth ers hynny…
The concert was held in the Aula of the Karolinum, and old hall in the original university complex. It’s where all the graduation ceremonies and important events are held, and it was full of important-looking people, including the new Rector in all his bling. The Choir sang two songs, but the best one by far was U hodila from “The Brandenburgers in Bohemia” by Bedrich Smetana. It’s been stuck in my head ever since..
